okay, well...

This sucks.

I have a ruptured disk in my spine and it's pressing against my sciatic nerve which is radiating pain down my whole right side to my ankle.

I was offered three choices.

1) PT and Pain Management
2) injections for the inflamation
3) straight to surgery

I opted for #1.
It hurts like a bitch though.

I'm just not too keen about the idea of anyone putting anything sharp next to my spinal cord.

My luck, I'll get some doctor who takes one look at me and sees that I remind him of some ex-fiance that left him standing at the alter or something.

No, better!

I'll remind him of his ex-wife who took him for everything he was worth in the divorce and now he drinks his lunches.

WHAT IF THE DOCTOR WITH THE SHARP OBJECT SNEEZES AT THE WRONG TIME!

Oh my God.

I think I'll just try to deal with the pain for the next two months without going insane. If it's not better by then, then I'll consider one of the other options.

If any of you have had anything like this (Degenerative Disk Disease) or a ruptured disk or back surgery and want to share with me how it went, I'd appreciate that.

  1. I sent some messages on Twitter, but my recommendation is to try the injections. If you wish to discuss further, just let me know.

  2. I Twittered you a couple of things, but my advice would be to have the surgery, and to do it soon. Having spent the last year dealing with this myself, I totally feel for you. The thing is, when a disc is just bulging, it's probably fine to try and treat it with PT and/or injections. (Though, from everyone I've spoken to, injections don't work at all.) But once the disc is ruptured, that's it. It can't repair itself. You can skirt by for a while, but most likely, it's just going to get worse. I got to the point where I couldn't even walk anymore. SCARY. I'm not going to tell you I'm pain-free following my surgery, because I'm not. But I'm FAR better than where I was. I know surgery is scary, but it's better than the alternative. The longer that ruptured disc is pressing on your nerve, the more pain you'll have, and the harder it will be for the nerve to heal later. Feel free to read my blog or to hit me up with an email. And whatever you decide, I wish you the best! I know how hard this is!
